The first courthouse in Decatur County (1823) was a small log cabin not far from the Flint River. Shortly after it was completed and the opening session of court was held, a group of irate citizens, protesting a verdict they did not like, took it down log by log and threw it into the river. The next morning there was only a vacant lot where the new courthouse had stood.
